There is a widely held belief that the name came from a servant of Saint Cattan; the ballie of Ardchattan’s Abbey lands who called himself Gillichattan Mor and is seen as the clan’s first chief. This very powerful confederation of clans was made up of two main divisions, respectively under MacIntosh and MacPherson leadership, with some septs and family groups joining for protection under a general banner. These being namely MacPhails, MacBeans, Cattanachs, MacKintoshes and their cadet branches: the Shaws, MacCombies, Ritchies, MacThomases and the Farquharsons. Clan Chattan didn’t fair well after the 1745 rising resulting in the MacKintoshes then becoming the dominant clan. There is a widely held belief that the name came from a servant of Saint Cattan; the ballie of Ardchattan’s Abbey lands who called himself Gillichattan Mor and is seen as the clan’s first chief.
